The American Dream and the US Election

November 8, 2016

All eyes are on America today as the nation decides on the 45th US president, will they make history by voting for a woman? I investigate The American Dream and what does it mean?

'The American Dream is rooted in the Declaration of Independence, which proclaims that "all men are created equal" with the right to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

The original American Dream was first written by James Truslow Adams in 1931 "life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement" regardless of social class or circumstances of birth.' sourc

Truslow Adams inspired a materialistic ideal, rags to riches, more more more, exemplified by the novel, The Great Gatsby.

The American Dream, the romantic ideal of a penniless immigrant landing in the promise land, making it big! It's down to your vision and work ethic to make your fortune. Gary Vaynerchuk is a great modern example of someone who is living this dream, here in an interview with Larry King, his hard work and determination is getting him nearer to his ultimate dream, will he ever do it?

America may have their 1st female President, will we see a nurturing mother to a sick nation? Her campaign has painted her as a caring soul with this Hillary film talking about women and here talking about positivity gangs She dedicated her pre debate 3 speech to climate change, supporting Al Gore, a voice in climate action. All positive messages, a caring society looking out for each other.

Is this a New American Dream?

Suze Orman has a vision in her book The Money Class, she writes 'It’s time to create a New American Dream that is based on honesty, authenticity, good intentions, and genuine need.' 'The New American Dream asks you to fashion a dream that suits you—not one based on false premises and the expectations of others' source
I like this idea, we are all different, live your life, not an other.

Donald Trump seems so backward and out of date, deep in his materialistic world. Trump Towers and the boufanted wives, casinos, limos, his empire. My favourite pre election film is the Trumpette's BBC video, it feels so unreal, like a big joke. Trump is pure cartoon evil, profiting from people losing their homes in the 2008 recession, building walls, inciting hatred, old fashioned sexism. He's like a ricidulous clown with his one liners, tight lips and candy floss hair. Love Barbra Streisand's parody of Send In The Clowns.

Alas Hillary is no angel, her email scandal, this Assange interview and her war monging as Secretary of State. But Hillary is the less of two evils. She's an intelligent, powerful woman who has worked hard, been strong and never given up.

I'm joining the Astro Twins and visualise Hillary to win. I'd love to think Hillary puts her positive words into action and brings America to a more caring place, a beacon of hope to bring life, liberty and happiness to the nation or is this just a silly dream?

Good luck America! I hope the result makes the world a better place.
